Relevant Links and What They Mean To You

Chain LinksPeople who dabble in SEO and even people who refer to themselves as SEO experts can never seem to agree on the subject of relevant links. My personal opinion and what I tell my users is that the relevant links seem to carry more weight than a link that is not relevant. However, you do not necessarily want to turn away a link that is not relevant to your site. The first thing you have to decide is what is truly relevant to your site. In today’s article we will look at what makes a site relevant and what relevant links mean to you. So, without further ado, lets get started.

The first thing that I would like to tackle is what effects relevant links have on your site. The answer to that can be both simple and complex. I learned a long time ago that you really want to KISS when it comes to things like this. So, with that said, we are going to take it down the simple road. Relevant links will help drive traffic to your site as well as help your overall Google ranking. Understand this; I said HELP, not make up the entire ranking. Google’s algorithm is much more complex than that. Now, before we move on, let me also state that having a non relevant link on your site will not hurt you. However, I have seen porn and gambling links bring PR rankings to their knees so be careful in that respect.

Now, let’s take a look at what makes a relevant link. If you are running a sports site, basically any other site that deals with sports, athletes, athletics, equipment, teams, or sports news would be a relevant site. You can even move a few degrees to the right or left and pick up sports camps or sports shoes and I think you would still be in the same ball park. And speaking of ball parks…This is what I mean by the list can be expanded when it comes the relevancy.

circle of friends Relevant Links and What They Mean To YouSo, since this is a Real Estate network, lets take a look from a Realtor’s® perspective and what might be a relevant link to them. The first and foremost thing that people would think about is a Real Estate agency and other Realtors®. However, mortgage lenders, banks, loan officers, home inspectors, home warranty providers, home owner’s insurance providers, title companies, escrow agents, closing attorneys, notary closers, appraisers all have relevancy to a Realtor®. Builders, re-modelers, contractors, and painters can also be considered relevant links. However, if you want to sway a few degrees to the right or left, schools, churches, and local venues could also be considered relevant to your site.

So, with all of this information, I hope that you are getting my point. If not, let me delve a little deeper and just spit it out. For the foremost, ‘a link is a link’ and if you have people who are willing to link to you, then great. However, if you are going to link to them as well, you want to make sure that this is a site that you want to be linked to. The last thing you want to do is link to someone that promotes exactly the opposite as you.

Now, get out there and create links all over the Internet and get more traffic.

I have to wonder about having all those links on your web site, seems to me that it would become very cluttered. When I go to a web site and I don’t just mean a real estate web site I look for it to be user friendly. I don’t want to spend a lot of time waiting for it to download to begin with and then I want to find my information as quickly as possible, I don’t want to have to wade thru things to get to it. But I don’t disagree with having lots of links either as it makes it so that a person doesn’t have to keep looking on the internet when they can find it all on one site, providing they can find it though.

  2. Amy, that is where the design of the site has to be good as well. If everything is cluttered all over the place, then you are right; it is difficult to find what you are looking for. That is one of the reason it is imperative for a website to have at least one sidebar so they can have links and such there but out of the way for people that are searching for the meat of the site.

I do a lot of searching on web sites, I like to stay informed of just about everything and since I am a real estate agent I am more partial to the real estate web sites and it just stuns me of the mess that some of these people have. I look to see the person or company that created the site and I try to stay away from them although it is not their fault it is the person that owns the web site, it is what they want. I just don’t see why though but then there are some that have nothing, just the name of the company and their contact info and then I have to wonder why, it does make for some interesting search of what or what not to do

  4. Amy, what you are referring to is what we basically sit and do all day. With R & D Art, you would be surprised of some of the request that we get. We are currently in the middle of one build where the client has 48 pages of content and from what I have seen so far, it is at least in triplicate if not quadruple. If they would just consolidate it, I think they still get the same message.

Most clutter is caused by too many gadgets and widgets all through the site. This in turn slows the load of the site as well.

I always believed that links are made for people to follow – they are actually the roads that lead us from one site to another…

The idea that we should use only related sites to link is, in theory, correct, however, sometimes, when we browse the web, we might be tempted to take a different path and follow a different link. I like StumbleUpon for offering such a possibility. :)

As far as SEO is concerned, you hit the nail in the head!

  6. Mihaela, I have to agree that being able to go from one site to another is an alluring thought. With that said, people still have to be cautious with what sites they attach themselves to.

  9. Eric in Silicon Valley siliconvalleyrealestateinvestor.com says:

Is it true that the more links you have on your site, the more you’re somehow diluting their value? I’ve seen that SEO analysis of a page includes counting how many outbounds links there are. Also, is this a factor that a beginning blogger should spend time worrying about?

As long as we’re on this topic, there’s actually another related question I’ve been trying to figure out for a long time. This has to do with the nofollow tag. I understand that the nofollow tag prevents the referring page from transferring the fabled “link juice”, but at the same time, it still counts as any old link, right? So, is that like saying the search engines see it as a link from a PR 0 site?

    Thanks!

Eric, I have heard rumors of this being true, but I do not believe that there is any concrete evidence. I guess if one saturated their site with links, it would be over-kill. Personally, we recommend no less than 3% of the content to contain keywords while no more than 20%. With that said, I personally think that 7 to 10% is adequate.

As for the dreaded “nofollow” tag, what you are actually doing is telling the search engine that you do not trust this content, so therefore, do not go to the link. It would me that if you provided a link to me and I did one in return for you and mine was a “do follow” and yours was a “nofollow”, you would benefit more than I would.
