Domain Mapping; Let Me Be Myself So I Can Shine
If you are unfamiliar with domain mapping and what it can do for you, then this article is for you. In a nutshell, domain mapping gives you the ability to be yourself so that you can shine. Online networks like Positive Real Estate Professionals can offer this to it’s members to help shorten their URLs as well as make the URL more about them. I decided to add a video below because it is what inspired this post.

Domain mapping allows you to map your existing network site to a domain name that you own. This is totally different than having the ability to mask your domain. How, you ask? Well, in simple terms, domain masking only covers up the domain names but will never change from one page to the other. Let’s say that you are using the name http://mydomainname.com to mask your http://positiverealestateprofessionals.com/username site. With masking, when someone types in http://mydomainname.com, it will show as the URL for each and every page. Though this might be okay with some people, I think it is somewhat lame. The reason for that is because it appears that all you did was cover up the true domain.
With domain mapping, the appearance is much different. When you take that same URL, http://mydomainname.com, and have it domain mapped, it will replace http://positiverealestateprofessionals.com/username. This way, when you go to the About Us page, instead of seeing http://positiverealestateprofessionals.com/username/about-us, you will see http://mydomainname.com/about-us. This will be true of any page that your readers visit. Ultimately, it looks as though you have had a website built on your domain, when in reality, you have the power of a network behind your site. In the end, you are getting the best of both worlds.
