Link Farming is just another form of Spam.

Today I want to look at Deep Links. What is a deep link? According to Wikipedia: Deep linking, on the World Wide Web, is making a hyperlink that points to a specific page or image on another website, instead of that website’s main or home page. While the links in your blogroll are great, they by definition are not deep links. Do you see the links to the articles immediately preceding this paragraph? They are examples of deep linking because they go to a particular location (the individual blog posts) and not the overall blog URL.

Deep linking is not confined to linking to blog posts alone, though this is one of the most common practices. A deep link can also link to a non-main page, a bio page, a form, or any other informational page. You can easily create these deep links either externally or internally. An external link connects to a webpage on another website. An internal link is one that links to information on the website where the post is actually written; i.e. linking to a previous relevant post or another minor page on the same website.

Deep linking, like using keywords, should be done in moderation. Deep linking is an effective, and the easiest, of  link building tools. Though deep linking is a good tool to use, it should not become a substitute for reciprocal and one-way linking with other websites.

Deep linking is the ONE big thing you need to do when you want to improve your blogs / sites position in the SERPentines. Underestimating links that point to pages on your site other then the home page is really foolish. I mentor quite a few start-up bloggers / do SEO for small start-up companies and hammering the importance of deep linking into their heads is top of my list of things to do. Can you guess that this is something I am really passionate about SEO wise, rofl? SY

PS This comment links to one of my articles on Hubpages also this is an example of deep linking plus hubpages itself is a great resource to build your own backlinks ;-)

@ Sy- Thanks for contributing to the conversation about deep linking. It is such an easy thing to do that the only reason I can imagine that someone doesn’t do it is because they don’t know about it. BTW, I am now following you on HubPages!

Thanks for explaining deep links. I had heard the term but did not know what it was. It’s not so mysterious after all. when you look at backlinks, it’s interesting to see that search engines look at both backlinks to individual pages (ok, “deep links” as I understand now), in addition to the main page, and in fact, each page’s page rank is calculated separately. I wonder if the main page gets the benefits of all the backlinks for the whole domain.

@ Eric – Thanks for commenting. You bring up a good point with regard to each page having its own PR. Personally, I limit the PR bleed by making all my pages except my ‘Welcome’ and blog page as index, no follow. For me I would prefer that my PR be concentrated on one or two pages (my main pages) rather than sharing my PR with say my ‘About’ page or a page with only a contact form. I would think that the main page would get the benefits of all the links but that benefit can be somewhat lessened if the PR is bleeding. Here is an article you may want to read on PR Bleed
