One of the great things about living in Southern Utah is that we have a very low rate of crime.  Sure there are problems here and there, but overall, we don’t have a lot of crime here.  What crime we do have is mostly property type crimes and are not violent crimes.  That isn’t to say that are satisfied with the number of crimes that we have.  We would love to be crime free as would everyone!

I wish that I could say that we have no homicides nor assaults, but that isn’t accurate, they occasionally happen, jut not very often!  We do have some theft problems and like everywhere else, we have problems with alcohol and drug abuse.  We don’t live in a Utopia, but it is a lot better than some areas, and worse than others!

This is lucky number 13 in our series of post of why we love living in Southern Utah, this post is Cedar City specific.  We love Cedar City because it is the “Festival City” , meaning that there seems to always be something going on.  Right now The Utah Summer Games are winding down.  They are an event similar to the Olympic games and provide people of all nearly all ages to compete in athletic events.  Soccer, basketball, archery are just some of the events.  The games are centered here in Cedar City, but some of the events take place as far away as the Provo area.

We are just a few days away from the Utah Shakespearean Festival’s beginning.  This of course runs the rest of the Summer and features Broadway plays as well as Shakespeare’s plays.  The Neil Simon Festival runs at the same time and obviously features his works as well as other Broadway styled plays.  It is fun to live in a City that is still small enough that you notice the vibrancy of these festivals, along with the others that take place throughout the year.  It is fun to see the people that come from out of town to participate in these events, and we welcome them!

Another of the great things about living in Southern Utah is that we have what the old timers would call “Elbow Room”. That is to say that we have a lot of wide open spaces.  Some of these spaces are privately owned, but much is not.  This creates a great place to go to get away from the rat race.  There have been occasions when I have just gone out there to hear myself think!  How ever you wish to look at it, they are nearby, and they are good therapy.

As you can see, we have a lot of elbow room!  This makes for a great place to take a walk to clear your head, and another reason that we love living in Southern Utah!

In continuing with our series of why we love living in Southern Utah, I thought that I would pick another thing that we sometimes take for granted.  We have great sunsets!  I know that it isn’t like the sun setting over the ocean, but it is pretty spectacular when it sets over mountains as well.

These are just a couple of examples of the sunsets the we get to see each night.  Just one of the many reasons to love living in Southern Utah.

One of the reasons that we really love living in Southern Utah, is that we are really close to the Mountains.  The Mountains provide some wonderful recreational opportunities as well as some really nice shots with the camera.  These photos that I am using were taken at different times, but they are all in the mountains.

It is such a enjoyment in our lives to be able to look out of almost any window in town and see a Mountain!  There is so many fun things that one can do in the mountains, hiking, fishing, camping, hunting, mountain biking (on approved trails), riding horses, riding atvs (again on approved trails) as well as photography.  We invite all to come up and enjoy our Mountains with us!

Continuing with my theme of blogs about why we love living in Southern Utah, and especially Cedar City.  I have been thinking a lot about the importance of the past couple of Holidays that we have celebrated, Memorial Day and Flag Day.  There is one thing that we have done here in Cedar City recently that has really made me proud to live here and really to be an American.  We are essentially still a small town, yet we have done a nice job remembering why we can celebrate Holidays like these past two and the Fourth of July.  Remembering heroes, that is another reason that we love living in Southern Utah..

In continuing our series of blogs on living in Southern Utah and why we love it, I was looking out at the mountains and I noticed something that I had taken for granted, our red hill here in Cedar City.  I know, red hills are pretty common in Southern Utah, so what is the big deal, right?   Well, the big deal is that we have many different colors in our landscapes here in Southern Utah, so we should never become bored with our scenery!

This is is a photograph I used earlier, but at the back of the golf course you can see rainbow canyon, it is raining and a low cloud cover today, so I really can’t get another good photograph of it right now, maybe for a later post!

As you can see, we do live in a very diversely colored landscape.  Something that we love, even if we seem to take it for granted on occasion.

Another reason that I love living in Southern Utah is that as far as recorded history goes, we are fairly young.  What I mean by that is most of the recorded history begins with the Mormon Pioneers as they entered the area looking for places to settle and farm in 1851.  I have met people that had met or knew some of the great characters of Utah and the West’s history.  My mother for instance knew Butch Cassidy’s younger brother, Dan Parker.  Dan Parker lived in Parowan for a time and was a good friend of my Grandfathers.

My father met Matt Warner, who when my father met him was the Marshall of the City of Price, Utah.  Matt Warner is largely an unknown to many people, but he was Butch Cassidy’s first side kick.  Matt Warner was caught served a prison sentence then after gaining his freedom was hired by Price City to be their Marshall.

These are some photos of abandoned houses of Pioneer Vintage, houses who once were owned by people with hopes and dreams similar to those that we have.  To have a place to raise a family, live safely and build a legacy.  I hope that you enjoy, this aspect of Southern Utah!

This is really becoming a fun series to blog about.  If I were talking, I would probably just keep rambling on and on and on.  You get the picture!  I have talked a little bit about some of the “ancient history” of the area, I also want to touch on the more modern History of the area.  Most people know that the as far as recorded history goes, the Mormon Pioneers settled this area.  Many of my ancestors were among those pioneers.

The town of Parowan served as a starting point for many settlement expeditions, including Cedar City, St. George, Las Vegas and San Bernardino.  Parowan is a beautiful small town, just what a small town should be, it has it’s own stores and restaurants, it is a very cool place to live.

Today I want to show you another reason that we love living in Southern Utah.  The photograph that I am going to insert is of the Government Point area of the Boulder Mountain.  Under that point there are several wonderful fishing lakes that hold clear, blue water.   My father grew up in Torrey, and spent much of his life fishing and working on this part of the Boulder Mountain.  He and his brothers cut in many of the roads that are still in use today.

It has also been said that a branch of the Old Spanish Trail followed under the rim of the Boulder Mountain.  The Great Western ATV Trail now follows a large section of that area.  The Mountain itself is host to all sorts of wildlife from bear and moose to elk, deer, antelope and many predatory animals like Mountain Lions, Coyotes and foxes.
