Why We Love Living in Southern Utah XIII

This is lucky number 13 in our series of post of why we love living in Southern Utah, this post is Cedar City specific.  We love Cedar City because it is the “Festival City” , meaning that there seems to always be something going on.  Right now The Utah Summer Games are winding down.  They are an event similar to the Olympic games and provide people of all nearly all ages to compete in athletic events.  Soccer, basketball, archery are just some of the events.  The games are centered here in Cedar City, but some of the events take place as far away as the Provo area.

We are just a few days away from the Utah Shakespearean Festival’s beginning.  This of course runs the rest of the Summer and features Broadway plays as well as Shakespeare’s plays.  The Neil Simon Festival runs at the same time and obviously features his works as well as other Broadway styled plays.  It is fun to live in a City that is still small enough that you notice the vibrancy of these festivals, along with the others that take place throughout the year.  It is fun to see the people that come from out of town to participate in these events, and we welcome them!

Why We Love Living in Southern Utah XII

Another of the great things about living in Southern Utah is that we have what the old timers would call “Elbow Room”. That is to say that we have a lot of wide open spaces.  Some of these spaces are privately owned, but much is not.  This creates a great place to go to get away from the rat race.  There have been occasions when I have just gone out there to hear myself think!  How ever you wish to look at it, they are nearby, and they are good therapy.

As you can see, we have a lot of elbow room!  This makes for a great place to take a walk to clear your head, and another reason that we love living in Southern Utah!

Why We Love Living in Southern Utah

I have been toying with this idea for awhile, a series of blogs of why it is that we, the C Team, love living in Southern Utah.  I will include photos and descriptions of where the location is in the photograph.  One of the real reasons that we love Cedar City is that it is in a beautiful area, not only that it is fairly centrally located, we are around 3 hours from Las Vegas Nevada and about 6 from Phoenix or Southern California.  We are the same 3 to 3 and a half hours from Salt Lake City Utah.  Anyway enough of the typing!

New Office Space update, almost done!

Darcy and I have almost completed our office move.  It was a lot more work that I had anticipated!  We moved from basically a bull pen scenario to our own private office.  There is a lot more to decorating than I for one, had thought.  I am grateful that Darcy has such a great eye!  My muscles are still a little sore, and we have spent some time shopping for decorating items.  Really glad that there is a Tai Pan Trading fairly close!

When it is completed I will attempt to add a photo to the blog.  The biggest thing is the amount of time that moving and decorating consumes!  I have barely had time to check email, let alone write any new content!  The other area that has taken a hit is my reading time, I love to check out news articles to see what the media is saying about our industry.  Anyway, hopefully things will be completely back to normal in a couple of more days!

Motivational Monday II…more Keys to success…..

I just posted a blog based on a great quote by Arthur Ashe, now I have come across another quote along the same lines.  This one is by Ralph Waldo Emerson, one of my favorite thinkers and writers.

“Without ambition one starts nothing. Without work one finishes nothing. The prize will not be sent to you. You have to win it. The man who knows how will always have a job. The man who also knows why will always be his boss. As to methods there may be a million and then some, but principles are few. The man who grasps principles can successfully select his own methods. The man who tries methods, ignoring principles, is sure to have trouble.”

This is so true in our industry!  What a great blue print to attain success in real estate or any other endevour!  Simple basic steps, ambition leading to work, which leads to knowledge.  But most importantly, all being guided by principles (like our code of ethics).  Without adhering to and following these principles, we will wind up in trouble!

The truth is, if we don’t follow these steps along with adhering to principles, we are also in trouble!  We need to be ambitious, industrious, and constantly gaining knowledge.  If we’re not doing these steps, we are destined to fail!

Motivational Monday…Do What you do…..

I came across a great quote that works for some motivation.  The quote is from the Tennis Great Arthur Ashe.  It goes:

“One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation.”
This is an important thing to remember, self confidence should come only after one puts in the time to thoroughly prepare.  Too many people want to take the short cut and get to success without putting in the time to prepare.  It has often been said, “he is prepared, shall not fear.”  That is where the self confidence comes in, at least in my opinion.
I am sure that no one has come across an individual in life or real estate that had extreme self confidence without any real reason.  These people would go on and open their mouths and would give away the fact that in reality they didn’t know what they were talking about.
I am a firm believer that without preparation, you won’t achieve any lasting success!

Spring Fever…

I must not be busy enough, I have been finding some great articles the past week or so.  Some are so good that I have felt compelled to share them with everyone.  This one comes from the Deseret News, and it is an article about Spring Fever.  I found it interesting and vindicating at the same time, I have been going through Spring Fever in the worst way the past 2 or 3 weeks.  Anyway I hope that you enjoy it!

Where the Rich Live……

A great article that comes from the Wall Street Journal discusses where many of the rich live and it isn’t New York or Los Angeles.  It is right here in Utah.  Okay, so it isn’t in Southern Utah, but up near Park City, in Northern Utah.  My brother lives in Park City, and it is really beautiful there!  It is in the mountains, with ski resorts nearby.  In the Summer it is a place to get out of the heat.  Any way here is the link to the article:

If you’re like me, you can’t really afford to rub elbows with the rich, or maybe that isn’t your thing to begin with, there is always Southern Utah.  I know that we have some weathly people that live here as well.  Both here in Cedar as well as in St. George, there are gorgeous, executive homes.  There are also several large ranches in the area.

What I am getting at, is by coming to Utah, you are gaining a lot more than you’re giving up!

Whose Reality?

Yesterday I was playing on the computer in the family room.  Our niece is visiting and she had the Reality Show, The Hills, on.  I will admit that I didn’t pay a lot of attention to it, I caught snippets of the dialog and stole an occasional glance at the “real people” involved in this program.

I have to admit, I DON’T get it, nothing about that show, nor many of the other “reality”shows do I get.  My reality is that I want to avoid being stranded in some place with a lot of different people to play survival games.  I know that some people see this as great escapism and therefore entertaining.

Like I said, I don’t get it!  I understand shows like American Idol, it is essentially a talent contest, where people are trying to forge a career in the music business.  I also understand the Biggest Loser, because I too need to lose several pounds.  I find for myself reality shows that I like are sports, I think that I would stand a much better chance of hitting Justin Verlander’s fast ball or sinking a basket in the NBA than I would ever have of keeping up wht the Kardashians or playing golf instead of having to work ie the The Hills.

I will admit that I was spoiled growing up, my father and my uncles were terrific oral historians.  Each of them had the unbelievable ability to tell a story that was better than watching something on TV or at the movie, they had a way of telling something factual and you felt as though you were part of the story.

I was also blessed to have an Uncle that survived the initial invasion on Omaha Beach.  When you could get him to talk he was infinitely more interesting than any celebrity’s life.  His stories of the war were so realistic that you could see the colors, hear the noises and almost smell the fear.  To me, that was interesting.  One of the things that I have been blessed to be able to do is to talk to people.  I have found that most “common” people are much more interesting than those that Hollywood has chosen to put on these programs.

Like I said, I don’t get it.  I am sure it is my loss, but I am more than okay with that loss!  I find common people much more interesting and viable than shows like this, I am probably in the minority, but there again, I am okay with that also.
