October 3 – Crossroads at Crabapple Antique & Art Festival

City of Milton

A tradition since 1969, this one day only, rain or shine, outdoor festival features 50 local juried artists and 50 American Country Antique Dealers from six states. Thousands of antiques, accessories, and unique pieces of art in all mediums will be available, so come enjoy this old-fashion festival. Included in the festival are roaming musicians, food for sale benefiting the Boy and Girl Scouts, children activities from 2 ’til 4 p.m., a home tour, and trolley rides. An event not to miss. Make your own scarecrow, visit city’s Scarecrows on the Square

Show your group, business or school’s creativity and personality by making a scarecrow as part of the fourth annual Scarecrows on the Square contest, September 26-November 3. To get ideas for your scarecrow, visit the city’s scarecrow “Parks,” who will arrive on the Square August 31 at the Glover Park Concert Series.

Public scarecrow contest

The public is invited to make scarecrows, which will be judged on originality, construction and presentation. Creators are urged to use a theme and name that showcases your business or group’s personality or celebrates Marietta’s 175th anniversary with a historic figure.

A $25 entry fee will be charged for each scarecrow, which should be set up by September 30 for judging October 8.

School scarecrow contest

City and county schools and school organizations are invited to make their scarecrow. Entries will be judged on originality, construction and presentation, and schools are urged to use a theme and name that showcases your school or group’s personality or celebrates Marietta’s 175th anniversary with a historic figure.

No entry fee will be charged for school scarecrows, which should be set up by September 25. The school division will be judged during the Marietta Reads kickoff September 26.

Winners of both contests will be announced and prizes awarded at the Halloween Happenings Costume Contest on the Square October 17 at 1:45 p.m. Scarecrows will need to be removed by November 2.

Scarecrows on the Square is held annually, in conjunction with the Harvest Square Arts and Crafts Festival and Halloween Happenings, which takes place October 17.

Eliminated state grant increases homeowners’ property tax bills 8/21/2009

Marietta homeowners will soon begin receiving their 2009 property tax bills and may realize an increase as a result of the Georgia General Assembly not funding the Homeowner’s Tax Relief Grant in the 2009 state budget. This amount was paid previously on the property owner’s behalf by the state and is not a city of Marietta tax increase.

The increases will range between $22.93 for properties that have the school tax exemption and $166.69 for properties that have a regular homestead exemption. “Taxes are due 60 days after they are mailed,” Tax manager Marsha Beard said.

If your taxes are paid from an escrow account through your mortgage lender, you may want to notify them so the escrow payment amount can be adjusted accordingly.

In 1999, the governor and General Assembly appropriated the grant to counties, cities and schools, giving tax relief to homeowners in the form of a tax bill credit.  According to legislation passed this year (House Bill 143), the grant will only be made available in the future if state revenues grow at least 3 percent plus the rate of inflation.

Council approves bike trails and dog park
8/12/2009

 Marietta City Council at their August 12 meeting approved creating hiking and family-friendly mountain-biking trails at Wildwood and Burruss parks off South Cobb Drive and Cobb Parkway.

To help prevent injuries on the trails and ensure long-term trail sustainability, directional signs will be posted to let bicyclists and pedestrians know which way to go.

Trails will be opened to the public August 24, Marietta Parks and Recreation director Rich Buss said.

Council also approved a dog park at Wildwood Park, which Buss expects to open before the end of the year if funding is secured. To prepare the park for residents and their four-legged friends, workers have to cut down trees, clear brush, install fencing and level the ground, Buss said. Residents will be able to bring a limited number of breeds and dogs when they visit the park when it opens.

Encouraging revitalization of current parks, establishing new parks for active and passive use and rejuvenating park and green space for the community are goals City Council established as part of Marietta’s vision statement.

Roswell Receives WaterFirst® Community Designation

The City of Roswell Mayor, Council, Department of Community Affairs and staff celebrated becoming a Georgia WaterFirst® Community at the Covered Bridge on Thursday, August 6. The WaterFirst® Community designation officially recognizes the commitment of communities to excellence in water resource management and stewardship.

“Roswell was founded and established because of our water resources and today we continue to conserve and protect this great amenity,” explains Mayor Jere Wood. “Becoming a WaterFirst® Community enhances our commitment.”

There are eight major components of the WaterFirst® Program, and the extent to which the participants will need to address each one is dependent on the size of the community and the water-related services that it provides. The components include:

• Watershed Assessment;

• Stormwater Master Planning;

• Water Supply Planning;

• Water Supply Protection;

• Water Conservation;

• Wastewater Treatment Systems and Management; – (N/A to Roswell)

• Residual Biosolids; – (N/A to Roswell)

• Water Reclamation and Reuse. – (N/A to Roswell)

Roswell was presented WaterFirst® road signs and a plaque recognizing the accomplishment during the ceremony.  Roswell will also become eligible for other benefits, including reduced GEFA interest rates on state loans for water related projects.
