Gwinnett County School Closed due to Stomach bug

   p BUFORD, Ga. – A Gwinnett County elementary school will be closed Friday after a record number of students called out or went home sick.

Parents of children at Harmony Elementary School received a letter Thursday afternoon stating that the school would be closed Friday.  The closure come after about a fifth of the students at the school exhibited flu-like symptoms.

Gwinnett County Public Schools spokesman Jorge Quintana said that they don’t believe that the outbreak is H1N1, but rather Gastroenteritis which is more commonly referred to as stomach flu. 

Quintana said that the school will be scrubbed down and will be ready to reopen Monday morning.  However, they ask parents not to send their children to school if they are still experiencing symptoms.

A chance to get the hard-to-find H1N1 vaccine produced a polite stampeded of parents – and not too happy children – in Fairfax County Saturday morning.

“Oh yeah, it’s definitely hard to get,” said a man waiting in line. “This is the only place you can find it right now.”

Whole families skipped Saturday morning cartoons and braved the rain – and the line – to snap up 12,000 doses of the drug, reports CBS News correspondent Kimberly Dozier.

“He has the shot and i feel a lot better. That’s why I waited in line for five hours,” said one woman with her son.

Many clinics, like the one in Fairfax County, limited their supply to those most at risk – babies, young children and pregnant women. But the virus is not so selective.

The Centers for Disease Control says H1N1 has spread to 46 states. More than 1,000 Americans have died, and more than 20,000 have been hospitalized.

Experts say it will likely spread further. So, much like a disaster declaration before a hurricane, the president declared the swine flu a national emergency. The White House says it’s not meant to scare anyone. It simply loosens some of the bureaucratic red tape to make it easier for hospitals to get what they need, should the epidemic get worse.

And health officials have now given doctors easier access to a new weapon against H1N1, an experimental drug called Peramivir, made by Biocryst Pharmaceuticals.

“It’s highly potent on the H1N1 virus,” said Jon Stonehouse, the President and CEO of Biocryst. “There are lab tests conducted by the CDC that show it’s the most potent inhibitor of the H1N1 virus.”

But the drug hasn’t gone through all the necessary and time-consuming FDA trials yet. So the FDA issued an emergency authorization to allow doctors to give the drug to the most seriously ill – those who aren’t able to swallow antivirals Tamiflu or benefit from Relenza, which is usually inhaled. Peramivir, also an antiviral, is given intravenously.

CBS News found eight patients who were deathly ill, but survived after being given the drug as a last resort, like Jon Boudrot, 51.

“I am a lucky son-of-a-gun to be here,” Boudrot said. “No question about it.”

Delays in producing H1N1 vaccine mean some of the children getting the shot today may have trouble getting the second dose recommended for children under 9 years old.

Harmful Bacteria May Hide On Soft Surfaces In Your Home

As a H.E.L.P. Inspector and a certified IASQ (Indoor Air & Surface Quality) professional when I ran across the following article it got me to thinking about my own home and environment.  Once we became associated with the Healthier Environment Living Program we immediately treated our own home.  This was before the kids went back to school.  I am happy to say that everyone in our home as been healthier and happier.  Our son did pick up a stomach bug from school and while I heard about others having problems for days, my sons only lasted a day.  I truly believe that the XMICROBE™ Technology prevented the germs from spreading through the rest of the family.  I’m also very glad to say that when we treated our home, the sofa was one of the items my husband hit and needless to say, when my son ended up sick, the sofa is where he spent 95% of his time.  Thank goodness it had been treated.  Now I’m not saying that we won’t ever get sick, because we’re not in a plastic bubble, we live in the real world where germs and bacteria are.  What I am sure of is, anything germs that we pick up on the outside, has less of a chance surviving and growing inside our home.

Some commonly overlooked household soft surfaces include:

Sofas-Since kids spend a significant amount of time playing, sleeping and eating on the sofa, bacteria tends to accumulate on this piece of furniture. However, a recent survey from the Hygiene Council found that the majority (61 percent) of Americans sanitized their sofa only a few times, if at all, since it was purchased.

Mattresses-Families commonly think that washing their sheets is enough to keep their beds clean. However, people shed bacteria-harboring skin cells onto their mattress each night when they sleep, which becomes especially problematic when someone is sick.

Pillows-Any surface where people rest their heads is bound to be filled with bacteria, especially surfaces that are consistently used, such as pillows. The mouth, nose and ears are vulnerable orifices that rub against pillows and pick up bacteria left behind by previous users.

MRSA. Staph. A new superbug. All are an infection control manager’s worst nightmare.  One company wants to provide a little H.E.L.P.  After more than three years of testing and numerous applications, Germnx LLC, an indoor air and surface quality control company, has rolled out its Healthier Environment Living Program.

These days Kevin Hanna’s voice is a little hoarse. That’s because he’s been working overtime extolling the virtues of the new technology that promises to revolutionize how hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare facilities protect against infection.

The program is divided into three steps.  An initial visit is made to take surface and air readings that are sent off to a third-party laboratory for analysis.  “You get a full report showing exactly what you’re breathing and what you’re coming into contact with,” Hanna said.

After the initial testing a new water-based, 100-percent nontoxic solution is administered to surfaces and the environment.  The technology can be applied at the rate of 20,000-square feet an hour by a fogging machine.  The technology physically ruptures the cell walls of these microbes, without the use of poisons. Since H.E.L.P Technology’s methodology is mechanical instead of a poison, it does not create “superbugs,” which are microbes that build up a resistance to treatment.  The technology works by laying down molecular spikes that are long chains of atoms large enough to pierce the cell walls of various microbes. Being the size of only about one thousandth the diameter of a human hair, they are too small to harm large cells in mammals.

These chains of atoms carry a strong positive charge that attracts negatively charged bacteria.  Hanna says H.E.L.P Technology has been found in independent testing to be effective against a wide array of microbes, including Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, various Salmonella strains, black mold, athlete’s foot, Influenza A, skin infections, and others.

The market for the new product seems endless. The third step is another visit for more tests that verify how well the product is working. Each year “sick building syndrome” affects schools, factories, apartment buildings, offices and even hospitals.

Resistant strains of bacteria (Ecoli, MRSA, etc) contaminate sports facilities, health clubs, cruise ships and even prisons. Toxic mold problems are especially prevalent in moist environments and following natural disasters such as floods.

Hanna says conventional products penetrate living cells and kill by way of poisoning or chemically altering the organism. They are designed to act quickly and dissipate quickly to avoid adverse effects to humans and animals due to their toxic ingredients.  Most commercial antimicrobials used for treating building surfaces do a great job of getting a quick kill on bacteria and fungi, although most have a limited spectrum of effectiveness.

Heavy metal based antimicrobials, such as silver ion may leach into the environment and lose their effectiveness over time. “It’s basically like putting a bed of nails over every single surface in your facility,” Hanna says of the H.E.L.P. technology.

Hanna said independent tests were done on a surgical mask and lab coat. The technology was added to a rinse cycle with a surgical mask and lab coat. The two items were washed 50 times and dried.  The items were then exposed to MRSA for 24 hours. The mask came back 99.9 percent disinfected and the lab coat was still 100 percent disinfected.
