Hardwood Flooring Grades

This New Jersey flooring guy is writing some excellent posts. If you’re considering hardwood flooring, this is a must read! Lori

Beauchene Prefinished select grade Maple 251x300 Hardwood Flooring Grades: Thats the Look of Love!

Here’s the thing; I think there is a problem with the word ‘grades’, when it comes to hardwood flooring.

The very concept of grades hold all kinds of cultural weight, with one grade being all about how one particular one is better than another, kind of like how we think of grades in school.  The word ‘grade’ invites you to draw a quality comparison between one thing and another.

When it comes to wood flooring, this often leads to misconceptions about quality. It leads some to think that a ‘select’ grade is a safer purchase in terms of durability than a ‘natural’ or ‘folk’ grade.

Here’s something else; when it comes to hardwood flooring, thinking about grades as a measurement of quality of the product  isn’t the right way to approach the concept at all.

But, that being said, what are grades for hardwood floors in place to tell you as a buyer of wood floors?Like many things, grading is all about your point of view, and your expectations about what a wood floor is.

For instance, a lot of people love the look of wood grain.  But, they also want a certain sense of uniformity, and with a consistency in the grain patterns of the floor they’re looking to buy. They want tasteful refinement.  In doing their research, they’ve learned that a certain measurement of color variation in a wood floor is to be expected.  And they know that certain species (like cherry and maple, for instance), have naturally occurring patterning and ‘beauty marks’ no matter what section of the lumber their floor will be taken from.

After all, wood floors are natural materials.  And nature is all about variation, and about natural characteristics.  Yet, when it comes to the floor they imagine in their heads,  it’s a more refined and and continuous floor color range and grain pattern they want.  So, in looking for a hard maple wood floor for instance, they might go with this kind of look:

select maple wood flooring 300x194 Hardwood Flooring Grades: Thats the Look of Love!

But, this is only one perspective.

Another point of view when it comes to wood floors is the embrace of random patterns, colors, and character.  Buyers with this kind of look in mind are interested in really obvious patterning like larger knot holes, mineral streaking, and other sources of color variation.  For these buyers, the wood floor they imagine in their minds tells the story of where their floor comes from; The Wild, and all of the wild artistry that a real wood floor can afford.

This type of buyer, also looking for a hard maple floor,  may be more interested in this kind of look:

natural maple wood flooring 300x186 Hardwood Flooring Grades: Thats the Look of Love!

These two examples are the same species. The boards in a chosen batch, decided upon by a grading system,  have been taken from sections of the lumber to meet the myriad of expectations of the buying public along a spectrum.

And this, friends, is what wood floor grading is all about. The industry recognizes that buyers have different expectations of what a wood floor should look like.  It’s not that one grade is better quality than another.  It’s that a specified grade appeals to a certain set of aesthetics.

There are a few characteristics that set the standards:

  • large knotholes, which are always ‘secure’ (they don’t pop out)
  • small knotholes, or ‘pinholes’
  • mineral streaking and other color variation

So a ‘select’ grade will have fewer instances of this.  And a ‘natural’ grade (sometimes called ‘folk’ or ‘rustic’) will feature more of these characteristics proudly.

Wood floors are diverse.  And luckily, the industry helps to make choosing the right look that you’re going to love pretty easy.

Cork Flooring – Why we LOVE it!

This is an awesome article by a New Jersey flooring guru with everything you need to know about cork flooring. I think Demetrius and I are seriously considering replacing our kitchen tile flooring with cork flooring after reading this. I’ve seen it before and it is simply beautiful – and more durable than it sounds!  Lori

Cork Flooring – A little tutorial on why we love it! (Members Only) (edit/delete)

(Re-Post Public)

Introduction to Cork Flooring

Cork Flooring in Kitchen

Cork Flooring in Kitchen

Cork flooring is one of the most beautiful and comfortable floor material options available. We install a ton of cork floors in our area especially in the Kitchen and Den and can attest to the comfort and beauty of these floors (see above photo).

Cork flooring is environmentally friendly and cork is considered a renewable and sustainable natural resource. These floors are suprisingly afforadable and their installed cost per square foot is similiar to that of a hardwood or laminate floor. Cork gives the room such a high-end look!  The realtors we work with love it as it makes the house stand out from the crowd!

This tutorial will explain all about this wonderful floor and its benefits – and why we love it!

What is Cork?

whistler tree

The Whistler Tree (World’s Oldest Cork Tree)

Before you can fully appreciate this floor material you really need to understand what this material cork is and what makes it special.

What is Cork and Where Does it Come From?
Cork is harvested from the bark of the cork oak tree found in the Mediterranean. Cork comes from seven countries including Portugal, Spain, Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Morocco and France. Of these countries, Portugal is by far the largest producer of cork with over 30% of the world’s cork trees and 70% of the world’s cork production.

The Whistler Tree shown in the above photo (which got its name from the birds who nested in it) is the world’s oldest currently producing cork oak tree and was planted in 1783 in the Alentejo region of Portugal near the town of Åguas de Moura. Cork trees are harvested by hand every nine years and this one yielded one ton of raw cork in 1991, enough for over 100,000 wine bottle corks versus the typical yield of 4,000 corks.

Cork bark is made up of a tiny sealed honeycomb cellular structure (14-sided polyhedrons) containing gas of 90% air. These cells provide resiliency (cushion) and insulation and there are about 40 million of these cells per cubic centimeter. Cork can be compressed up to 40% and quickly returns to its original shape. This all works to make cork a very special flooring material.

Benefits of Cork Flooring

cork floors are healthy and safe

Cork Floors are Healthy and Safe

The Benefits of Cork Flooring
Let’s take a quick look at some of the benefits you receive with cork:

  • Comfort & Softness
The air trapped inside the cellular structure of cork provides a natural shock absorbing feel to the floor. It’s great for applications where you are standing a lot such as in a Kitchen providing relief for your feet, back and legs.
  • Beauty
Cork has a natural beauty rivaled by few other natural materials. It comes in many colors and different manufacturers provide various tile shapes and patterns as well.
  • Noise Reduction
The same cellular structure that makes the floor comfortable also reduces noise and vibration. Unlike hard materials like tile, wood or vinyl, cork is quiet and reduces impact noise such as something dropping on the floor or the sound of walking by people or pets.
  • Healthy and Safe
Cork has natural properties that are anti-allergenic and resistant to insects. A naturally occurring waxy substance in cork called suberinrepels insects, mites and mold and protects cork from from rotting when wet for a long time. In addition, suberin is naturally fire resistant and cork doesn’t release any toxic off-gassing when it burns. These natural properties plus the coatings used to seal cork flooring make it healthy and safe for adults, pets and baby.
  • Durability and Ease of Maintenance
Durability is a strong trait of cork and cork floors have been used in public buildings such as churches and libraries since 1898, long before residential applications.

Cork Floor Pattern and Texture

Cork Flooring

Cork Flooring Pattern Detail

Sometimes it’s hard to see from photos just how rich a texture and pattern a cork floor has, so I’m providing this detail photo for you. The quarter is shown to provide a sense of scale.

Cork now comes in a variety of colors, patterns and textures. But as you can see, the depth and richness that cork can have is very special.

Some companies mix rubber with cork to provide a special texture, some others are known for very vibrant colors. Some patterns resemble plank boards. Whatever your tastes, you’re sure to find some pattern and color that’s right for you.

Cork Flooring Construction

Cork Floor Construction

Cork Floor Construction

Cork Flooring Construction: Floating Floor (glueless application)
Although the actual construction of cork floors will vary slightly between manufacturers,it will generally consist of the following components.

  • Cork Underlayment
This is flexible low-density cork material used to provide acoustic insulation. It may be applied separately but is usually mad an integral part of a floating floor panel.
  • Stabilizing Core
This is the structure of the floor panel and is made from either HDF (High Density Fiberboard) or MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard). The edges of the core will be milled in such a way as to allow the interlocking of the panel to adjoining pieces.
  • Cork Core
The inclusion of this component varies by manufacturer but its intent is to provide additional insulation and impact absorption comfort for walking and standing.
  • Cork Bark Veneer or Top Layer
This layer is what you see. It can be the veneer from the cork tree bark some processed cork to get a particular pattern or texture.
  • Wear Surface
This can either be factory applied or field applied and will usually be a UV hardened varnish, oil or other sealer.

The Cork Floor Panel

Cork Flooring Panel
Cork Flooring Panel

Cork flooring often comes in panels, although some manufacturers provide it in tiles too. In the case of a floating floor installation, the panel looks like the photo above, and is approximately 12″ wide by 36″ long. The edges have specially fabricated grooves, similar to a tongue and groove, but are designed to interlock firmly in place.

Cork Floor Maintenance

Cork Floors Require Only Light Maintenance

Maintenance of Cork Floors
With all the other benefits of cork flooring, would you expect anything less than low maintenance for these floors?

Well cork does not disappoint. Requiring only periodic vacuuming and damp mopping, the following is a general outline of good maintenance practices for your cork floors:

  • Vacuum or sweep or “swiffer” the floor weekly.
  • Damp mop the floor monthly but do NOT use a lot of water.
  • When cleaning the floor, use a damp mop with a PH-balanced detergent or mild soap to clean and keep the surface free of abrasives such as grit or sand.
  • Always avoid the use of harsh cleaners such as abrasives, oil or ammonia-based cleaning products. Only use cleaning products approved by the manufacturer.

I trust this blog was helpful (but not too long winded)! Cork is one of our most favorite products that we sell and install, but not much in known about.  I hope this helped to shed a little insight on it.

Not only do you get to share each other’s google juice, but you are providing valuable information for your blog readers. When I re-blog a post, I preface it by saying, “This Philadelphia Realtor writes a great post about pricing your home correctly from day one. If you are considering putting your home on the market for sale, please take a moment to read his post.”

The preface clearly indicates that the content is not mine and gives credit to the original author.

Settle Inn or Settle Down? You can do both at the Settle Inn RV Park in Pawhuska Oklahoma! Open house June 15, 2010!

Settle Inn RV Park, Pawhuska Oklahoma

My parents, Don and Patti Wells, built an RV park in 2002 nested in the beautiful rolling hills of Osage county and they named it Settle Inn RV Park – it’s on the edge of their property in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. It has progressed over this short time into a pretty upscale park with many amenities.

Although it’s a newer park with 19 full-service sites (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer), Don keeps adding and enhancing – there may be more than 19 sites now. There is also a band stand, storm shelter, laundry, shower, restrooms, picnic tables and a playground for the kids.

Stage or Pavillion for everyone's use at Settle Inn RV Park, Pawhuska Oklahoma

Recently, Don and Rick Geisler’s crew built a cabin available for rent and it was christened “The Settle Down” cabin. The entire cabin is built with cedar and the wonderful aroma itself is pleasing and “settling.” The cabin and its name reflect the atmosphere, ambiance and general welcoming and friendly nature of the entire park.

You can visit the cabin and take a tour of the park at an upcoming open house, Tuesday June 15th, 2010 from noon to 8pm.

The cabin is what you would expect to find in a fairy land, in my opinion. There is a living area combined with a kitchen area, comfortable seating to view a large, flat-screen television, bedroom and private bath with full shower — and a loft with room for additional sleeping. Everything you need is in the cabin, from linens to dishes, so just bring your camera and a change of clothes.

The intricate details and love poured into this cabin creation is beyond words, so I hope you enjoy the photos below.

Social Media in Plain English

Now that I am working closely with several people in my local area in teaching businesses the power of social media, I am constantly on the hunt for new, innovative ways to explain why they should be involved in networks like Twitter and Facebook, etc…

This is one of the best examples I have ever found as to why social media exists, why it works, and why so many are turning towards it to help build their businesses!!

Our family’s rendition of the Super Bowl party – chili cook-off with the Kingsleys

Our family’s rendition of the Super Bowl party

Deme and I are happy to be included in the Kingsley family’s annual Super Bowl get-together and chili cook-off. Chili cook-off winner, Alex and fiance Barbra

Now, a chili cook-off may sound like a simple thing during a Super Bowl game, but this family owns the Coney Island restaurants around Tulsa and they all make excellent chili every day. So, it’s slightly intimidating to enter their contest for the best chili.

Tonight, chili entries were submitted by Chuck and Pope; Michael Kingsley; Deme; Alex; and Barbra. First time contestant and fiancé to Barbra, Alex came out the winner and took home the trophy. Congrats Alex!!

Best thing about Super Bowl evening with the Kingsleys is that the guys watch the game in the den and the ladies visit in the kitchen. Tonight’s kitchen entertainment was Cranium, a fun and interactive game guaranteed to make you do silly things.

Sophia and Allison teamed up; Barbra and Kate teamed up. I was on a team with Evonne and Pope. If you’ve never played Cranium, you should try it. It’s a combination of trivia, cherades, drawing, humming, sculpting and more.

The chics playing Cranium

Sometimes the artist has to close her eyes while drawing. Sometimes everyone playing gets to guess the answer. The humming was definitely fun, as well as acting out a person your team-mate has to try to guess.

Barbra did an excellent impression of Clint Eastwood. Pope stumbled a bit over humming “Stop in the name of love,” and Evonne drew an awesome King Kong that I couldn’t guess. We invented a few dances tonight and Barbra got her aerobics in.

Sophia and Evonne are the natural artists, although Kate sculpted an excellent burger. Pope is the wordsmith and Allison is the dictionary. Most amazing win was Barbra and Kate’s drawing of the toucan, guessed in less than ten seconds.

Eventual winners of the Cranium game were Pope, Evonne and myself.

Oh, and we heard that the “Saints” won as well. Coincidence?
