Knoxvile Market Square District Newsletter

I thought that I would share the Market Square District newsletter with all interested parties. This is from one of the venues that SPC operates out of, so I figured that it would be of interest to several of our local readers.

MSDA logo Greetings!

Is this really the last weekend before Christmas?  If you haven’t already filled your list, consider visiting some shops you wouldn’t think of on a regular basis, such as the East TN History Center and the Visitor Center’s Uniquely Knoxville shop, who both are often patronized only by visitors to Knoxville.  Both have wonderful gift shops stocked with locally made crafts, Knoxville-themed items, books on history and other items you won’t see every day.  Share the love of Knoxville.  We at the Market Square District Association wish all of you a very Happy Holiday season, and hope to see you around downtown.

A Christmas Carol poster

Ebenezer Scrooge is a business man who thinks only of making money. For him Christmas is, in his own words, a humbug. It has been seven years since his friend and partner, Jacob Marley, died and on Christmas Eve Marley’s ghost tells him he is to be visited during the night by three spirits. The first is the Ghost of Christmas Past who re-visits some of the main events in Scrooge’s life to date, including his unhappy childhood, his happy apprenticeship to Mr. Fezziwig who cared for his employees, and the end of his engagement to a pretty young woman due to growing love of money. The Ghost of Christmas Present shows him how joyously is nephew Fred and his clerk Bob Cratchit celebrate Christmas with those they love. The Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come shows him what he will leave behind after he is gone. Scrooge awakens on Christmas morning, a new man intent on doing good and celebrating the season with all of those around him. (1951 – Runtime 86 minutes)

Tour de Lights
Krutch Park, Dec. 16, 7p.m.

This fun, easy bike ride is mostly an excuse to get creative and bring some light to a winter evening. We start at Krutch Park and bike around downtown a bit, just to make sure all the people strolling see us, then tour around nearby neighborhoods looking at holiday yard displays. There are prizes for the best decorated bicyclist, bicycle and helmet. And if that weren’t enough, Mast General greets our return with hot cocoa and cookies! It’s free. Helmets are required, because we care about your brain. Sponsored by the City of Knoxville, the Knoxville Regional Bicycle Program and Mast General Store.

Market Square Holiday Market

Saturday, 11a.m.-8p.m.
December 12, and 19, 2009

Local craft and food vendors will line Market St. with handmade products for gift giving. Stroll through a winter wonderland, with lights strung up through Krutch Park and a fire pit for marshmallow roasting.

A small farmers’ market will be held from 11a.m.-2p.m. for those farmers able to extend their season on Market Square.  Visit Colvin Family Farm, Rushy Springs Farm, Lakeview Farm, Organicism Farm and Musick Mountain Farm with radishes, lettuces, greens, root vegetables and more.  A CSA share from one of these farms would make a great gift!

Performances on the Theatre stage will begin around 4 pm and will continue on until our Early Kid’s Countdown at 9 pm.

Bijou Theatre
Tennessee Shines
Wednesday, Dec. 30, 7:00p.m.

TN Shines November 2009Buddy Miller is one of the most in-demand instrumentalists in Nashville if not the entire world. In addition to being a stellar songwriter and performer (both solo and with his talented wife Julie), Buddy has performed in Emmylou Harris’ backing band, Spyboy, as well as played and recorded with Steve Earle, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, and our very own host Jim Lauderdale. Jill Andrews recently released her first solo CD after building a reputation as a remarkable vocalist and songwriter with the everybodyfields, who played the very first Tennessee Shines. She returns to perform with her new band. Julia Nunes has built a huge audience through confessional folk songs and inventive covers that she’s broadcast on the web, reaching out and speaking to young fans worldwide. Larry Cordle is most widely known as a writer and has had songs recorded by Ricky Skaggs, Garth Brooks, Alison Krauss, and many others. East Tennessee’s The Drunk Uncles honor and follow in the footsteps of almighty honkytonk gods like Vern Gosdin and Buck Owens.

Scott Miller and the Commonwealth-Shiner Bock Rocks the Bijou
w/ Mic Harrison and the High Score
New Year’s Eve, 9:00p.m.

Celebrate the dawn of 2010 in the company of Scott Miller and his band the Commonwealth. Known for non-stop touring and his eight critically acclaimed albums as well as the latest, “For Crying Out Loud.” Equally at home playing scrappy, defiant rockers, humorous snips of esoterica, or tender tunes suffused with the quiet joys of home and hearth – this guy knows how to put on a show.

Save time and headaches by booking a 1 or 2 night hotel package when you purchase concert tickets. Just call or stop by the Tennessee Theatre Box Office, (865) 684-1200 ext. 2, for more information. Sorry, no web sales for hotel packages. (Just think how nice it’ll be to simply walk to the Hilton after the show.)

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. – The Tennessee vs. Virginia Tech bowl game will be shown live in the Bijou Theatre Gallery.
